Joydeb Kenduli is a village in Illambazar Block of Bolpur Sub-Division. It is considered as possible birthplace of the great poet Joydeb, who has composed ‘Gitgobinda’ in Sanskrit. This is one of the important religious centres in the state and revered ‘Radhabinod temple’ is located in that village. The Mela is organized every year in the memory of Kabi Joydeb on the occasion of Poush Sankranti and Makar Sankranti. It starts on the last day of Bengal Calandar of Poush Mash and continues up to 2nd Magh. Lakhs of devotees and thousands of Baul folk artists assemble during the Mela period and take holy dip in the Ajay River. It is one of the biggest Mela in the state. In the last few years, the Mela has become very famous. Hon’ble Chief Minister, WB had kindly inaugurated Baul Mela 2016 for the first time.
Mela Committee has made an elaborate arrangements including security, sanitation, health facilities for the visiting devotees. The online booking of stalls has been introduced for the first time for the benefit of shop owners. A website has also been inaugurated to give information about the history of the Mela and facilities made by Mela Committee.
This year a lot of importance has been given to sanitation. Joydeb Kenduli GP has already attained the ODF status and we are committed to observer Clean and Green “Nirmal Joydeb Mela 2017”.
